I’m Sydney Mays ( @samuraisyd ), the owner and designer behind SAD N DIRTY. This is so much more than a clothing brand to me. This is not a wholesale business, each and every piece is uniquely designed by me. Since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a  fashion designer. Somewhere along the way, I started to feel foolish for my dreams - thinking they were too complicated, not realistic and not a safe option. But (yes, I started a sentence with “but” :P) SAD N DIRTY saved me. It reminded me of my inner child. Starting this brand felt like one of the most natural things I’ve ever done. It’s hard to explain without being melodramatic, but indulging in this process wholeheartedly felt like my soul was singing a familiar melody. Drawing the pieces, designing the logo, sourcing the fabric and sewing prototypes felt like second nature. I’m so glad I allowed my soul to sing. This is the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life and I’m so honored and privileged to be able to share it with you. 

SAD N DIRTY is about not choosing the safe option, taking risks and never boxing yourself in. Every piece is designed by me. I start with either a sketch or sewing a prototype which goes through many meticulous samples and edits before I feel it’s perfect. I work with a small pattern-making studio in Manhattan to make all my products. I’m proud to be a Black-owned business made in America. This business is run exclusively by me - from photoshoots in my apartment, to sewing the shipping pouches and dropping the packages off at USPS.
